TMJ Rehabilitation
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the area directly in front of the ear on either side of the head where the upper jaw (maxilla) and lower jaw (mandible) meet. The TMJ is used throughout the day to move the jaw, especially in biting and chewing, talking, and yawning. It is one of the most frequently used joints of the body.
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD or TMD), or TMJ syndrome, is a term that refers to acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint. The disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant pain and impairment.
Physical therapy techniques can be employed to help this disorder:
* Manual therapy
* Anti-inflammatory modalities
* Postural correction
* Therapeutic exercises
* Activity/diet/job modification
